EPSRC
EPSRC's responsive mode funding is very flexible. They fund projects ranging from small travel grants to multi-million pound research programmes. You can apply for whatever length of funding you require, whether it is a month or six years.
You can apply for funding for a wide range of activities, including research projects, feasibility studies, instrument development, equipment, travel and collaboration, and long-term funding to develop or maintain critical mass. They particularly want to encourage high-risk/high-return research proposals relating to new concepts or techniques. There are no closing dates so you can apply at any time.

What they are funding;
The fundamental concept of Great Western Research is to promote collaborations between the highest quality research groups in the South West and regional businesses in order to attract international interest and recognition and to support the growth of the South West. NERC
We fund a small core of leadership in NERC Research & Collaborative Centers to enable, but not fully fund, the provision of scientific advice and national good services to the UK government, overseas territories, business and public, including response to emergencies.

Springboard is the new fund created to support the development of innovative ideas that will have a significant impact on the economy of Devon and Cornwall.
The Springboard Fund will consider assisting any organisation in the public, private or voluntary sector to support early stage development, feasibility studies or 'step change' activity. The investment may take the form of either a grant or a loan depending on the type of project and applicant organization. It is likely that grants will be made to ‘not for profit’ companies and charities and both grants and loans will be considered for commercial ‘for profit’ organisations.
Applications are welcomed from organisations or projects focusing on:
- innovation
- development for high levels skills in the workforce
- creation of a positive environmental legacy
- generation of an economic impact greater than the singular improvement of an applicant's core business activity

The South West Angel and Investor Network (SWAIN) connects private investors, or 'Business Angels', with companies looking for investment. SWAIN specialises in helping small and medium sized companies to find equity finance, and assists private investors in the South West to search for investment opportunities in businesses with growth potential. SWAIN operates throughout the South West region incorporating the counties of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, former-Avon, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

Technology Transfer at the Wellcome Trust is a committed funder of translational research, the process by which innovations are translated into new health products.
Wellcome help to bridge the gap between fundamental research and commercial application by funding applied research or development projects to a stage where they are attractive to a follow-on funder, such as venture capital firms, industry and public-private partnerships.
