New SEMTA Train to Gain Compact Scheme - £65 million now available
Employers in the Bioscience Sector, who are based in England, can access £65 million of Train to Gain funding to invest in skills. SEMTA, the sector skills council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies are keen to hear from you if your organisation has identified training needs and you want to find out more about this excellent opportunity. This new Compact scheme has been broadened and improved and can support training at higher levels than previously available. It can also be used to support sector specific training, for example, regulatory affairs training. This funding, which became available in Sept 08, is available for 2 years. Support for Level 4 qualifications will be available in early 2009.

Peninsula Environment and Human Health Forum hold commercial event and launch information booklet.
The Peninsula Environment and Human Health Forum, chaired by Professor Mike Depledge from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, held their first commercial workshop on the 31 Oct at the Knowledge Spa in Truro. This event was focused on discussing the diverse areas in which the expertise of the Forum members can support the business community. The meeting also saw the launch of a new booklet that gives information about the Forum, the Environment, Health and Well-being agenda in the SW and current and future initiatives. Pharmaceutical Chemistry Business conference, April 2009 – call for papers.
A conference entitled Strategy, Technology, Sourcing will be held in Konzerthaus, Freiburg, Germany from 16-17 April, 2009. The conference will discuss topics such as price versus quality, supply chain issues, capabilities and capacities, regulatory compliance and performance metrics.
The organisers are calling for papers from senior pharmaceutical industry management involved in strategic sourcing of lead optimisation, chemical R&D and process technologies for the development of pharmaceutical intermediates and innovative and generic APIs. These should address the issues faced in making outsourcing decisions, including strategies with respect to in-house supply or outsourcing; costings; globalisation; and short- and long-term partnerships. Case studies in pharmaceutical outsourcing are particularly welcome.
Chemical technology companies are invited to present papers on identifying opportunities in the marketplace; establishing partnerships; developing a strategy for supplying the pharmaceutical sector; and competitive issues regarding price, quality, supply and technologies employed.
Speakers from both pharmaceutical and chemical technology companies are encouraged to address the question: ‘What of the future? – The pharmaceutical outsourcing landscape in five years’ time’

BIA seminar on Funding R&D and Communicating with Stakeholders, 18 Nov, London

UKTI mission to New Zealand – agricultural and food-based biotechnology, March 2009
This valuable opportunity, being arranged to coincide with the the NZBio conference is being hosted by UKTI and the NZ high Commission in Auckland. There will be a particular focus on biofuels but the call for expressions of interest is right across agricultural and food-based biotechnology. The mission will focus on IP development and exploitation and new technologies. Where suitable linkages can be made, they should enable organisations to benefit from collaborative research opportunities, inward or outward investments and sales (or purchases) of IP or products. The NZBio Annual Conference in Auckland will be held from the 9-11 March.
