Life Sciences Research
UWE has particular strengths in biomedicine, appearance and health psychology, plant sciences, sensor science, diagnostics, epidemiology, science communication, water quality and air quality management, via the Faculty of Applied Science. The university has expertise and advanced facilities for modeling genomics and sensors science are applied to advancing practice in diagnosis and treatment of disease in humans and plants. This supports the diagnostics, pharmaceutical and agri-chemical industries including SMEs in the region.
The Centre for Research in Biomedicine (CRIB) uses advanced analytical and cell cultures to engage in fundamental research relevant to the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. It has developed laboratory models of disease and seeks to understand such processes by studying cell culture models. This approach allows new research methods to be developed that could ultimately replace experiments on animals in preclinical drug trials. New, non-invasive techniques of diagnosing and monitoring disease, and preclinical drug discovery, are also features of research conducted in the centre.
Centre for Research in Environmental Science investigates the removal of pollution from land using biological methods, as alternatives to chemical and physical treatments.
Centre for Research in Plant Science is involved in various areas of research including:
- Molecular genetics of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria
- Reactive oxygen species and free radicals
- Abscisic acid signaling
- Downy mildews
