SPEAKER PROFILES
Andrew Wood, Eli Lilly
Andrew Wood qualified in medicine at Oxford University. He joined Eli Lilly & Co in 1991, following 10 years in academic medicine. He has been involved in many aspects of drug development, with particular emphasis on Neuroscience compounds, and has led both clinical and preclinical research activities in UK, Belgium and Japan. He is currently responsible for the European regional component of Lilly’s Global External R&D function.
Andy Sandham, Abingworth
Andy Sandham has 28 years of experience in the healthcare sector, during which he has performed a broad spectrum of roles covering corporate strategy, operational management, business development and marketing. During this time he has contributed significantly to the establishment of successful drug discovery and development companies both in Europe and the US. Before joining Abingworth he was Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Ionix Pharmaceuticals, which was divested to Vernalis plc in 2005. Prior to this he served as Chief Operating Officer of Signature BioScience, Hexagen and Cantab Pharmaceuticals. Andy has also held business development and marketing positions at Amersham, Celltech and Roche. He is currently non-executive Chairman of NeurAxon and Novacta Biosystems. He has a BSc in Chemistry from University of East Anglia and a Diploma in Marketing from the Institute
of Marketing. Andy joined Abingworth in January 2006 to identify and create new businesses and provide strategic and operational support for existing companies within the Abingworth portfolio.
Philip Tellwright, SWAIN
Philip Tellwright brings to SWAIN a comprehensive understanding of investment into the small and medium sized firms market. For the past twenty years he has worked in four varied senior financial roles throughout the South West Region and has a proven track as a professional investor, Corporate Finance advisor and, in industry, as a Finance Director. An Investment Controller with 3i he completed over twenty investments, he spent seven years investing in small and medium sized businesses. He was also responsible for the management of a large portfolio of varied Investments across the South West region. In 1987 he moved to Hazlewoods, a substantial Gloucestershire based accountancy practice to co-ordinate their Corporate Finance activities. As the Director responsible for the Corporate Development arm he advised on numerous finance raising assignments, and was also successful in merger
and acquisition activities as well as providing business planning advice. In 1991 he moved to Devon based Inch's Cider Limited as Finance Director having previously advised the buy-in team on the acquisition of the company, and became an integral part of the team that successfully managed one of the fastest growing businesses in the Region through its most turbulent phase of expansion. Following Inch's Philip returned to Bristol to take up a second Finance Director role in a manufacturing environment at Brissco Equipment Limited.
Chris Barnett, Pera
Chris is a graduate of the University of Surrey, BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry (Toxicology) and a PhD in Biochemical Pharmacology. Since 1997, Chris has been involved with business and product development arising from the exploitation of intellectual property from research organizations. He has managed the formation and financing of new technology-based start-up companies and worked with a range of SME’s and larger organizations on the development of new innovative biomedical and medical products. In 2003, Chris became the Director for Research and Commercialisation at the University of Nottingham, a member of the UK Russell Group of research intensive universities, managing more than £300M of research programme and industry-related research and development. Chris has held several CEO positions of public and private sector companies and held non-executive directorships for several technology-based
businesses. At Pera, Chris is Practice Leader for Healthcare Technologies comprising a team of highly skilled biomedical and chemical scientists, engineers, and technologists delivering a range of expertise within the biomedical and healthcare technologies product areas. Following Brissco's, Philip joined Business West as leading Business Finance Adviser, during which time he advised on numerous finance raising assignments, including a considerable number of Business Angel investments
