BioApproaches SW main event Technology Transfer and commercialisation - Sponsored by Ashfords

Date: Thursday 22nd March 2007
Location: Ashford House, Grenadier Road, Exeter, EX1 3LH.
Key Focus: Wellcome Trust – Technology Transfer and commercialisation.

The Wellcome Technology Transfer Division seeks to maximise the impact of research innovations on healthcare by facilitating the development of early-stage projects to a point at which they can be further developed by the market.

Technology Transfer works through Wellcome Direct Investments to finance enterprises that will have a global impact on the biotechnology industry. Focus is primarily on early-stage life science companies; however, they also invest selectively in later-stage private companies. The Wellcome Trust typically investments up to £10 million over the life of a company through initial and follow-on financings.

Translational Research Funding from the Wellcome Trust

Fundamental research findings are often considered ‘too early’ or ‘too high-risk’ to be pursued by the corporate healthcare or investment sectors. Technology Transfer at the Wellcome Trust helps to translate early stage technologies by funding applied research projects to help realise their potential in healthcare. To achieve this, the Technology Transfer runs two funds for applied research projects where there is a need in healthcare, a potential new solution and a realistic expectation that the innovation will be developed further by the market.

Translation Awards are a £40M, five year grants scheme focused on healthcare innovation designed to respond to the funding gap in the commercialisation of new technologies in the biomedical area. Translation Awards support a diverse array of technologies from the physical sciences and mathematics, as well as biology. The second is a £91M, five year ‘Seeding Drug Discovery’ initiative, the objective of which is to develop drug-like, small molecules that will be the springboard for further research and development by the biotech and pharmaceutical industry in areas of unmet medical need.

For more information about translational research at the Wellcome Trust attend Technology Transfer and Business Development meeting run by BioApproaches SW on 22nd March (See Headline News) to hear Dr Richard Davis, Senior Business Analyst at the Wellcome Trust, talk about the funding opportunities available.
