News… News… News

- Three Wiltshire organisations have won a share in a £25m government fund to turn research carried out in the public sector into commercial success. NHS Innovations South West in Salisbury gets £995,000 for a project to make NHS research easier to sell. PPARC in Swindon will receive £893,000 to transfer information from three international research organisations. An MoD laboratory will get £450,000 to create license deals and investment opportunities in defence technology. Deals created by Ploughshare Innovations Ltd, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton Down, will cover a range of areas from telecommunications to diagnostics throughout the UK. The projects have been awarded the cash from the Department of Trade and Industry to market their work.

- Pennsylvania Gov: $500M for Bioscience Research Initiative Since passage of Act 77 in 2001, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDEH) has used 19 percent of the state's tobacco settlement funds to fund biomedical-related research projects through the Commonwealth Universal Research Enhancement (CURE) program. The program provides formula and competitive grants to universities to support research priorities set by PDEH. Gov. Rendell is proposing that the Commonwealth borrow $500 million to finance a new bioscience research initiative named after the late Pittsburgh scientist, Dr. Jonas Salk. The governor proposes to maintain half of CURE's funding level, but use the other half - or just under 10 percent of the state's share of tobacco settlement funds - to repay the bonds. The move is expected to provide greater flexibility in the use of the funds and hasten any economic development opportunities resulting from commercialisation of research results. If the request is approved by the legislature, the Salk Legacy Fund would provide dollar-for-dollar matching grants to the state's leading bioscience researchers in academia and industry. The fund would be administered by the Jonas Salk Legacy Fund board, to be comprised of university, medical research, bioscience, and public agency representatives. Nearly $100 million of the $500 million pool would be used in "starter kits" to help academic medical centers, research colleges, and universities buy the necessary tools and machines to conduct investigations and experiments. The remaining $400 million would be used for grants and awarded to companies and institutions planning to build laboratories and incubators. EVENTS - 3 month forecast in chronological order...

  • Monday 13 March, 2006. Genes and Gene Patenting: Is it fair? Parker Moot Room, Amory Building, Rennes Drive, Streatham Campus, University of Exeter. In today's global economy, plants from developing countries can be used to create new drugs and improved crops. Often not only these innovations but also the 'genes' that made them possible are 'protected' by patents. But what is the role of the patenting system in international trade? What exactly is a 'gene' patent? How are the benefits from using biological resources distributed? Is it fair? As the World Trade Organisation considers the role that patent-like protection will play in the global trading system, this panel-audience debate with expert witnesses will give everyone a chance to find out more about international trade and development, and in the role of the latest genomic science in these areas.
